How & Why We Choose
Scents
We regularly receive questions and feedback
about our scent selections. While we will offer new items here and there,
we have some criteria that we like to follow:
Scent selection criteria:
- Available as a natural ingredient (i.e.,
essential oil or other natural extract).
- Non-irritant, or otherwise generally
considered to be safe for use with the skin.
- Ecologically friendly, meaning that the
source plant is raised in a sustainable manner.
- Available at a reasonable price, which
allows us to keep the soap affordable.
- Popular enough to move inventory at a
regular pace.
For these reasons we have avoided the following
types of scents:
scent |
deterrent |
almond |
- cost and effectiveness of natural
source
nut allergen sensitivities
chamomile |
eucalyptus |
- some concern about irritation and
market appeal; we may offer this in the future
frankincense |
jasmine |
lemon |
- lemon can increase photosensitivity
(sunburn)
myrrh |
rose |
sandalwood |
- cost of essential oil
- traditionally has not been sustainably
harvested (this is changing)
tea
tree |
- not enough market appeal; consider our
gardener bar for hand/foot scrub
vanilla |
- effectiveness of natural source
(note: we are experimenting with a new source and hope to add
this scent by late October 2004)
